Now that you’ve spent time exploring a communication/collaboration tool, we are going to share our commercials and learn more about the tools.
Make sure you check the blog post from Friday to ensure you have all of the required components of this task. Let’s take a moment to upload the videos on your Google site. After creating a new page, titled “Communication and Collaboration,” you can attach your video at the bottom of the page or create a link to your video. Let’s look at how to do both right now. [Earlier I told you all that we would be embedding our Jing videos. Unfortunately, the file format of this free Jing version will not play within the Google Site. Later in the semester, we will use iMovie and Movie Maker, which will allow us to embed.]
You will also want to include a write up for your commercial. Provide an introduction for your commercial Be sure to make a link in your write up to the tool. For example, if you are talking about Twitter, make sure to link the word ‘Twitter‘ to the Twitter homepage.
There are other tools available that support communication and collaboration in K12 classrooms. I want you to know about as many tools as possible. On Wednesday you’ll start an activity called Think Like a Teacher (TLAT). In that activity you’ll design a lesson that uses technology to teach a content standard. So, the more tools we talk about, the more choices you’ll have to work with for your TLAT.
Blogs are a tool I use to communicate with you every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I use WordPress because I like how easy it is to create layouts and for students to access previous posts with the calendar. I have a favorite blog that uses blogger as a craft blog about knitting and posts updates on her baby. One of Gretchen’s favorite “mom” blogs to read is Dooce. Rumor has it she and her husband make over $5,000,000 with her blog! (Warning: some adult material on this site). There are blogs for everything – just do a Google search for your favorite topic and add the word “blogs” (ex: news blogs). You’ll find a long list of interesting sites.
Wikis are tools that allow you to collaborate on a website with other people. Your Google Site that you are using in our class could be considered a wiki if you chose to add collaborators. Here’s a video for more information about wikis.
I’m sure you’ve heard of Twitter. But most of us don’t quite get what it is or why anyone would want to use it. Here’s a video that will help to explain. Lots of famous people have Twitter accounts. Rumor has it that Kim Kardashian can make up to $10,000 per “tweet”. But having that many followers can also be costly.
Podcasts allow you to record or listen to audio from a class, an event, a renowned speaker, etc. If it includes video it is often called a “vodcast.” Searching iTunes will show you a huge list of what is available. You can view this video for more information.
There are many other communication and collaboration tools. One of my favorite places to search for new tools (that are free) is on the Go 2 Web 2.0 site. You might find exploring under the “kids”, “collaboration”, and/or “communication” tabs on this site will show you some additional tools you might want to think about using for your first Think Like a Teacher activity.
1. Read Chapter 3 and complete the Chapter 3 reading guide. You can also use this Goole form to enter your responses or you can turn it in on Monday if you are handwriting your responses. Remember, you need to complete 4 of the 6 reading guides for the semester. (Some of you will be halfway done!!!)
2. Explore the Go 2 Web 2.0 site and find a few more tools that our class might be interested in using.
3. Go ahead and introduce your commercial on your Google site. When introducing your commercial, make sure to include a hyperlink to your tool.
